trying to repair my friends computer, it will start up but after a few secs it goes immediately onto the safemode option page which when i press enter it sounds as if its looking for things but then it goes back to safe mode. My friend has mislaid her xp disc so really stuck on this-can anyone advise

You can't download a Windows disk legally. Your friend could contact her computer's manufacturer for a replacement, or Microsoft for a replacement disk (there is likely to be a charge for either).
However, it may be better to actually diagnose the problem which is effecting the computer before you start doing things with installation disks. Are you planning on using the repair console or just a reinstall?

as previously mentioned you cant download a xp pro disk and theres no such disk as a xp start up disk however you can use a XP Quick Boot Diskette(http://www.bootdisk.com/bootdisk.htm),A windows XP quickboot diskette is used to boot into your otherwise
healthy XP when your startup files are bad, missing, corrupted, or when the mbr is damaged
