Im locked out of my computer from a lack of a product key but i have allready had one for a while?

i was running a repair off my OS CD and left it unatended for a bit (dinner) when i came back my computer had apperantly reformated its self but my usser account is still here the problem is that when i try to log in im asked to submit a product key (like when you first install some sort of software) but the disk i have dont have a product key so i canot log in but i was able to gain acess to the internet from a link to the microsoft help site the OS is microsoft XP profesional SP1 i could youse any help you have to offer

if your machine came with xp originally,

the cd key is on the machine,

there's a coa lable somewhere on the machine and it would

say windows xp cd key...

otherwise if you got this version from a friend.. get it from him..

unfortuenly ms got smart, you may be able to get away using a friends windows xp key, but after x amt of updates the validate may recognized that the cd key is not the same for the version you installed on your machine... and freeze the system...

it sounds like it didn't format the machine, but delete the old instatllation files which why you have your old account...
