Depends on what you've got .. ad/spyware is everywhere and can seriously bog down your machine.

Firefox is much better at not allowing ad/spyware than IE.

I use Spyware Blaster and Spybot Search %26 Destroy running in tandem (using Firefox as a browser) with my anti-virus program (AVG). They are free if you don't mind updating manually.
