My computer says that windows/system32/config/system is missing or corrupt and cannot start. Ive run the repair using the windows setup disk but it doesn't work. Is there any way to backup the drive before I have to erase it and start over?
Can I back up a hard drive that wont start up?norton internet security 2008
Don't need to do anything hard. Insert your Windows Installation CD-Rom in the Drive, boot your system from CD-ROM, then go on installing windows, then Select " Repair Windows ", that's all you need to do,, nothings gonna change ...

sometimes you can set that drive as a secondary drive and do it or take it in to a computer specalist and they can do it really fast but sometimes depending on whats wrong with it you may not be able to save your files
you can either set the hardrive to slave instead of master or take the hardrive out and use it as a slave drive on another computer. I had an issue like this once, after researching on some forums I found out that you can use the setup disk to re-install windows. The computer will re-install itself without deleting any of the information on the hardrive. It only down side is it takes about 45-60 min. If it crashes or cannot re-install, then you have bigger problems with your hardrive. I have four hardrives on my computer and have it set up as a raid 2 system. Basically this means everything I do on one hardrive gets "mirrored" to the back-up drive.
go to the restore and restore it prior to the problem date
If it doesn't start how r u going to back it up.
Just reload windows without the format. Your data will still be there.
Losing data on a hard drive is the worst nightmare of any computer owner. However, some hard drive problems can be easily fixed yourself by using easily available tools. I found the info at http://fixit.in useful
