Why do I keep losing my Internet connection?

Broadband, Rounter, 2 computers connected - not networked. All the cables are secure and I have tried reinstalling the network drivers.

Only one of the computers is experiencing the problem.

Windows XP SP1

AMD XP2000

512 Ram

Full scans have been done with the following updated programs.

McAfee

Ad-Aware

XoftSpy

Hijcakthis

The problem is temperamental. It could happen every 5 minutes, 30 minutes, or it could be several hours before the connection is lost. I will be using Firefox, no other programs running, and suddenly I will get 'server not found'. Sometimes going to Control Panel - Network Connections - Local Area Connection - Repair - will solve the problem. Other times it won't. or it will say repair operation failed, and the computer has to be restarted to get a connection.

Any help would be appreciated.

If it has worked in the past and works on occasion you can safely leave out any software issues. The cable running to your computer from the router might have been damaged if it was ripped out or tripped over at one point or another. The port that it is connected to on the router might be going bad just from use or programming failure. Or the ethernet port on your computer might be faulty and failing from time to time. Try replacing the cable between your router and the computer, if that does not work you might have to look into buying a new ethernet card. Hope this helps
