I've owned my Dell Inspiron 9300 for a year and a half and the computer runs perfectly fine. However, the AC Adapter for it seems to be on its last legs--the cable that runs between my laptop and the adapter is "yanking out" on the adapter side (with over two inches of bare wire being visible) and I've currently got it patched together with electrical tape. Is it possible to fix the cable by myself, and if so how? If not, what are my options aside from buying a new one from Dell?

To answer your questions directly... YES, it is possible to fix the cable by yourself but it requires some skills on soldering (electronics). if you can, open the AC adapter (by unscrewing or by any means but be careful not to damage the integral electronic parts)... locate the two wires of the cable connecting to the circuit board.. you can either solder with a new electrical cable or just repair it with soldering only the bad part.
if this is too risky for you or you don't have the experience yet.. just try to call an electronics guy or probably an engineer, even 1st year college electronics students would be able to do it. this is a lot cheaper than buying a new one (if the problem is only the cables and not the electronics in it)
